Unusually for an interstellar nation, Kartli is a decentralized, feudal monarchy comprising numerous autonomous principalities united under a single crown. Each principality governs itself according to traditional customs, while maintaining allegiance to the monarch and participating in the kingdom's common defense and economic endeavors. While military and economic ties between worlds are maintained by fleets of modern starships, individual planets often maintain comparatively low-tech societies in an attempt to maintain the cultural and religious heritage. Traditional culture permeates every aspect of Kartlian life, from the intricately carved architecture of their cities to the rich tapestry of folk tales and epic poetry that forms the foundation of their oral traditions. The people of Kartli place great emphasis on hospitality, honor, and personal freedom, reflecting the rugged independence of their worlds.

Medea was not born into royalty, although her bearing in dignity in court might suggest otherwise. In fact, her poise is the result of starring in several scandalous historical holo-dramas, the very same dramas that brought her to the attention of her now-husband Georgi, Prince of Khaketi. When the King of Kartli was killed in battle with a Teutonian space fleet while on a secret diplomatic mission, the young prince Davit ascended the throne, while his grandmother the Queen Dowager took the reigns of government as his regent. In her attempt to consolidate power, the Queen Dowager appointed her son Giorgi as the prince's military tutor and her daughter-in-law Medea as the prince's academic tutor. As a result, Medea has found herself placed squarely in the center of the metaphorical battlefield of the palace, as Kartli's elite compete over who will control the young ruler.

Nina is the Archbishop of Mskheta, the largest church diocese in Kartli. Formerly a justice minister in the Principality of Khaketi, she attained Kingdom-wide prominence when she opposed the former Archbishop's attempt to lay claim to many planets in the Khevi sector under a spurious claim that a previous king had granted them to the church. Assembling support from church officials and nobles who opposed the Archbishop's land grab, and using a carefully curated (and sometimes questionable) collection of evidence, Nina was able to mount a successful legal challenge, not only convincing the King to reject the Archbishop's claim, but spurring a corruption trial that led to the Archbishop's ouster. The King then pressured his allies in the church to name Nina as the Archbishop's replacement in hopes that her time and energy would be dedicated to rooting out corruption in the church rather than the government. Meanwhile, Nina is using the seduction skills taught to her by Erofights League operative Caspian in order to continue subverting and recruiting agents in the royal court, having taken a very... permissive attitude toward her holy vows as a church official.
