Origin Story

Ken Erickson was born in the small apartment above Black Dragon Dojo, a modest but respected karate school tucked between a bakery and a train station in LA. The rhythmic snap of gis and the sharp kiai of students were the first sounds he ever heard. His crib sat in the corner of the dojo office; his toys were wooden practice swords and worn-out belts.

His father, a stern but principled sensei, believed karate was not about fighting—it was about discipline, humility, and self-mastery. His mother handled the administrative side of the dojo and was the emotional anchor of the family, teaching Ren compassion alongside strength.

Ken took his first steps on tatami mats.

Childhood in the Dojo

Growing up in the dojo meant Ken didn’t have a normal childhood:
• He bowed before entering any room.
• He cleaned the floors before he could properly write his name.
• He practiced stances while other children played video games.

By age five, he could perform basic katas. By ten, he was assisting beginner classes. The older students treated him like a mascot at first—until they realized he was faster and sharper than most of them.

But being “Sensei’s son” came with pressure.

He wasn’t allowed to quit.
He wasn’t allowed to fail.
He wasn’t allowed to show weakness.

When he lost his first junior tournament at age eleven, he cried alone in the storage room. His father didn’t comfort him—instead, he handed Ren a towel and said, “Wipe your tears. Tomorrow we train harder.”

That moment forged something inside him.

Training Philosophy

Ren was raised on three principles:
1. Karate begins and ends with respect.
2. Pain is temporary. Discipline is permanent.
3. The strongest fighter is the calmest one.

Unlike flashier fighters, Ren’s strength lies in fundamentals—perfect stance, precise timing, devastating counters. He doesn’t waste motion. He doesn’t taunt. He waits.

And when he strikes, it’s decisive.

Internal Conflict

Despite his skill, Ken struggles with identity.
Is he fighting because he loves karate—or because it’s all he’s ever known?

He envies classmates who chose their own paths. He’s never had that freedom. The dojo isn’t just where he trains—it’s who he is.

When a rival dojo challenges Black Dragon Dojo’s reputation, Ken must decide whether he fights to protect his father’s legacy or to define his own.
