Here’s a new one, Cat. Jade, as she’s asked to be known, was a bit of a surprise. Vanessa put me on to her trail after working with her for a public self defense seminar…she started out young as a professional martial arts instructor. Never interested in going pro, but she focused a lot of her life on training and studying, and she became quite good at teaching it. Over a surprisingly short time, a friendship was struck up between the luchadora and the kung fu artist- they’d spar on occasion, but more often it was time at the gym, going to plays, and having coffee. The two had spoken of Vanessa’s “side gig” a few times, but never in much detail until, on a whim, Vanessa invited her to come watch a match. As it so happened, that was Vanessa’s match with Anastasia Lehman, Vanessa’s debut and a masked wrestling match. Even though the match ended with a humiliating finish for Vanessa, it sparked something in Song, who surprised herself by fantasizing about the match for the next week straight…not just the physical pleasure, or the women in the ring…but the idea of competing…of testing her skills against another in earnest, and of conquering and being conquered. The masks also played a large role in her imaginings…a chance to be someone else, if only for a match, and to risk herself a bit. It wasn’t long until Song asked Vanessa for a different kind of sparring match…and then for training…Finally, after a few weeks, ‘Jade” took to the ring for her debut match, facing her friend Vanessa in the ring for real. I think she’s got a lot of passion, and there’s a freedom to her ring presence that I think would be great in the ring…I’d like to push her and Vanessa towards the masked wrestling league you’re building…Let me know.
