Piercing The Veil

I sat in the room I had cleared, dead center on the floor. Yuna sat in front of me, cooing a bit before we began.

"I know, I know. But whatever happened there is too large to ignore, I feel."

"Besides, there's no guarantee I will figure anything out."

A generic giant rat scurries into the room and hisses at everyone in it

I jump to my feet, Yuna taking her spot on my shoulder.

I wasted no time, shoving my hands out. Stringy wisps of glowing white light flowed from my fingertips, binding themselves around the [ENEMY_GENERIC_RAT02].

They immobilized it, as I had Yuna take a look over the thing.

It continues hissing even while immobilized. It's sounds becoming more high pitched. Rabid foam forms at its mouth

I cast out a few more wisping streaks of light, sending them slowly gliding around the rat's head and whispering soothing melodies into it's ears.

I attempted to pacify the rat, soothing it into a state of submission.

The rat's hostility noticeably diminishes

I slowly walk forward as the strands of light gently fade out, trying to establish a bit of trust with the thing. "No more binds, my friend. You may move as you like." I spoke in a smooth, polite tone. I slowly went down to my knees, getting at head level with the rat. I gently stuck a hand out, beginning to slowly stroke it over the rat's head.

"I have no quarrel with you, my friend."

The rat, at least his particular rat, seems receptive and will probably not cause you further trouble

I let a small smile cross my face, as I gave the rat a final pat on the head. "Go along now, friend. Be free and live."

I waved it along from the room, directing it out to the nearby wilderness.

The rat leaves. At least this one ended up in a diplomatic conclusion. But remember, there are countless other rats in existence!

"I do hope that rat doesn't get itself into any further trouble." I frowned a bit at the thought of it getting hurt. "Hostility is so needless."

I lingered for a moment, before turning back to my original spot and re-seating myself.

Yuna hopped off my shoulder, again taking her place in front of me.

I took a few deep breaths in, before raising my hands.

The same white and ethereal essence flowed from my fingertips, beginning to circle around me slowly in short wispy drags.

They grew in size and number, before a few of them floated to the blindfold covering my eyes.

Every so slowly, they looped around my head and untied it, before taking it floating from my eyes.

I began to see. Not the regular world, but what lay beyond it.

I focused my mind on the strange event that had taken place at the tavern, replaying the disembodied voice I had heard over and over again in my mind.

Any other visuals I was able to see faded from my view, as only one thing remained after a few moments.

It was the same girl from the tavern. Yet, something was different. Different in the worst way.

My eyes widened as the horrific voice filled my mind again, threatening itself upon it and fast.

I clenched my fists, severing my view from it specifically and returning me to where I sat. I scrambled for my blindfold, quickly tying it around my head again.

I began to shake, not able to control the horrid rush of panic that soon blasted its way through my head.

Yuna took notice, leaping to my chest. She nuzzled right into my neck, trying to comfort me and bring me back to my senses.

I slowly regained control, the noisy terror polluting my mind fading out as I felt Yuna comfort me.

I laid a hand on Yuna, slowly feeling my fingers over her feathers.

"...Thank you, Yuna."

I sat there for the rest of the night, eventually dozing off with Yuna's warmth pacifying my senses.
