Nagusa stumbles upon a small abandoned shrine in the woods and made it her home. After cleaning, tidying and sprucing it up, she has made it a haven for all visitors who pass by. While it is not easy to come across it deep within the woods, any and all travellers who stop by have left deeply satisfied, often promising to come back on another occasion. If you ever ask Nagusa why she is providing such service with no request of remuneration, she will only give you a sad smile an a single answer, "Penance".

The Shrine grows in popularity, and Nagusa has gained a small but steady stream of visitors. Not just to indulge in her services, but simply to hang out and relax in each other's company. One day, a fox comes wandering by the shrine grounds and is immediately attached to Nagusa. Nagusa senses the fox's immense magical potential, and takes her in, raising her on the grounds. As time passes, the fox's magical potential grows stronger still, and eventually completes her transformation into human form. Nagusa has named her Kiuko, and continues to nurture her growth, while starting to train her as a proper shrine maiden, to serve alongside her.

Tragedy strikes as one of Nagusa's guests lets slip the location of the Shrine one drunken night, and is overheard by a group of bandits. The bandits come in the middle of the night, hunting for both foxes. Nagusa manages to let Kiuko escape, distracting the bandits. After razing the Shrine to the ground, the bandits attempt to have their way with Nagusa, but falls one by one due to her unique condition. The last bandit, at a loss for what to do, sells her to a group of slavers.

Nagusa is resigned to her fate, but a chance encounter with Romantic, the local lord, results in her rescue. The lord not only made sure Nagusa recovered from all her injuries, but also rescued Kiuko after a brief search. Feeling overly indebted to the lord, Nagusa turns down his offer of residence in his mansion, finding a place for herself on the grounds of The House, with the eccentric landlady Okiku. Romantic respects her decision, but spares no expense in helping her rebuild the shrine at its new location

After the reconstruction of the new shrine, Nagusa is surprised one day when a young lady appears in front of her, seeking lodgings. Upon further probing, the girl expressed her wish for a place to belong, and offered to work as Nagusa's apprentice. Expressing her doubts at first, Nagusa put her to the test, and took the opportunity to introduce her to the finer points of service and subtle seduction. In the middle of the session, the matron, Okiku, came by to play, and took the opportunity to toy with the new guest. The young lady performed well enough to meet both Nagusa's and Okiku's expectations, and was accepted as the second resident of the Shrine. Her name is Hana, and the hole in Nagusa's heart, formed after Kiuko's departure, starts to mend and heal.

Shortly after adding Hana to the Shrine, Nagusa meets a young fox named Sunny while reminiscing about Kiuko by the lakeside. Though she came from a somewhat privileged background, Sunny had an endless appetite for adventure and had wandered into the forest in her journey. Taking pity on the young girl for having slept and lived in the forest alone for several days, Nagusa chats with her as she starts to look for potential locations for Sunny's new home. As the night falls and no decision is yet made, Nagusa takes her home to the Shrine, and Sunny becomes the third resident, although a temporary one

A few more days later, Romantic sends an escort to receive Nagusa and her fellow shrine residents at his mansion, intending to know more about how she is faring since the shrine's reconstruction. After a few mishaps on the journey, they arrive safely and Romantic treats them all to a wonderful buffet spread in the dining hall. Over the ensuing conversation, Romantic makes his intentions known that he intends to profit from the establishment of the new shrine. Nagusa turns him down, explaining that she has no intention of charging for her services, even though she is indebted to him. Romantic lets the matter rest for the moment, but the idea is still in his mind as he thinks of a way to profit from the establishment

Unknown to Nagusa, Romantic had obtained permission from Okiku, the matron of the House to set up an enterprise on the grounds. Okiku cared not for material riches, but thought it would be fun and she would have a larger pool of people to play pranks on. Nagusa was not pleased with the arrangement but deferred to the wishes of her two largest benefactors. Having secured the business, Romantic put out a call for people willing to work in the new establishment. Two individuals answered the call, and after an interview to ascertain their worthiness, Romantic decided to hire both. However, it seems that these unassuming bartenders have more depth to them than meets the eye...
