Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova (Level 1) mail warning

Bi / Switch

Hello. Bow down before me! Or freeze in the snow.

Identity

Anastasia was the fourth daughter of Tsar Nikolai II and Alexandra of the Imperial House of Romanov of Russia. Having ruled for around 300 years, Nikolai was the last Romanov to hold tsardom and Anastasia was the last imperial princess of the dynasty. Nikolai was a moderate ruler who raised his children with love, but, nurtured under the history of the Tsars, he was ignorant of the world and realities of Russia. Alexandra lived the idealistic life of a noblewoman. Anastasia was recorded as having to be a rambunctious girl who would cause mischief climbing trees but was also known to care for her sickly younger brother Alexei. Since her childhood, she heard the voice of Viy, being the proper heir to the family's magecraft rather than her father.

Despite the moderate rule of Nikolai, the state of the world was in a tumultuous state. The prestige of the Tsar was lowering due to their defeat in the Russo-Japanese War and shooting incidents upon the populace. Though they might have known peace had they not been an Imperial House, revolutionary sentiment was brewing within the populous. Due to the ongoing World War I causing mass famine, the frustrations of the populace reached a breaking point in 1917, leading to an incident in which a protest left citizens dead. Russian soldiers started a revolt, and the imperial guards sided with them despite martial law being declared in Moscow.

Nikolai abdicated after much uproar, causing the Imperial House to fall into disarray. The family was confined to house arrest, leaving little record of that time other than that they still employed servants. They originally may have had the chance to go into exile in Germany, her mother's birthplace, ending in a bloodless revolution. However, rumors spread that Alexandra was having an affair with the monk Grigori Rasputin due to her reliance on him, lowering her already poor reputation and making exile in Germany impossible. In April of 1918, the new administration feared that the Tsar may be reinstated into power by the force of the Czechoslovak Legion or White Army, so they decided to have the family executed. The day before their death, Alexei revealed the existence of Viy and the fairy's role and history to the Imperial household to Anastasia, but she did not make a contract with it. Despite wishing to hold an official trial, they felt the need to push it through due to the apparent threat the Tsar posed and executed the Imperial family and their servants in secret at the Ipatiev House.

As Anastasia was dying, she contracted with Viy, not as a means to save her life, but as a means of killing those who wronged her. Retaining some sense of consciousness through Viy throughout the event, she cursed the soldiers such that they would never know peace, stating, "I am watching. Death is too good for you. No, you're going to live in fear for the rest of your lives. I, Viy, will always be watching you. I will forever pass judgment on your sins. I will forever see to your punishment. I will always, always be watching...until the day you die. Always, always, alwaaays!!!"

Viy

Viy is a Russian Fairy or Elemental contracted to the Romanov dynasty who merged with Anastasia's Saint Graph. However, it is unclear if Viy truly qualifies as a fairy. Although first appearing in a story which shares his name written by Russian author Nikolai Gogol, there are many Slavic folktales featuring spirits that resemble Viy, leaving his true nature uncertain. Normally it looks just like a little doll, but when she releases her powers, you will see just a shadow.

Personality

Under normal circumstances, Anastasia looks innocent and distrustful. She talks in a distant and uninterested manner, especially immediately after being summoned, and is generally cold towards the masses. Due to her sheltered upbringing and the brutal death of her and her family, she holds no affection towards Russia and its people, whom she regards as a symbol of barbarity, slaughter, and fear itself. At the same time, she understands she is supposed to act as a proper heir to the Russian throne and that she is Russian herself. Her mentality regarding how to balance her social position with her feelings gets quite complicated, and her mulling over it may make her appear indifferent.

If she becomes close to someone, she shows them a more mischievous side and a love for pranks, though also becomes emotionally dependent on them. A few letters to her family survive today, showing that she was, and perhaps still, a naive girl with a deep love for her family.

Abilities

Anastasia is someone unbefitting of being a Heroic Spirit, lacking any stories about acts of heroism or barbarity. The only reason she can manifest as a Servant is that she once made a contract with Viy. Although similar to a Demonic Beast, Viy is a Fairy Elemental which allows Anastasia to manipulate ice and cold. Unlike most fairies, Viy can make himself visible and even lend his powers outside of those he has a contract with.

She is able to speak with Demonic Beasts.

Combat

In combat, Anastasia largely relies on Viy's ice powers. She can blow cold winds, creating spikey ice crystals from the ground, drop giant icicles onto her target, and dance around the target to create a small ice tornado. Sometimes Viy physically manifests to use his claws on Anastasia's enemies, shooting rays of light from his eyes, or assist Anastasia to strengthen her ice attacks.
