CORPORATE TOY AT GODDESS ENTERPRISES

I have gotten this job after all my other 2576 applications were left unanswered or were denied. I was happy that one company gave me the chance. And I desperately needed this job. I was willing to do anything. Maybe I should’ve never come here.

The interview was nice. The woman who interviewed me seemed friendly and asked me all the usual stuff. She asked about loyalty, full commitment, willingness to sacrifice. I didn’t listen. Maybe I didn’t even care. She was so beautiful too…

The next three months I was mostly doing intern work. I did the simplest of tasks and was running errands for all the higher ups.

After I thought I had proved myself, they gave me real work. I’ve gotten a computer and was given more and more tasks every week.

The company is offering after work activities and drinks every Friday, but only to employees who have been with the company for long or have proved themselves. I wanted to be part of this exclusive club.

I stayed late every single day and was the first in office too. Sometimes I slept there. I completed every task I was given ahead of time and I did them well.

After a while I thought I might have gotten their attention. My boss has now been talking with me quite regularly and has been inviting me to coffee just as often. The others are watching me closely and seem to giggle and smirk at me weirdly when I drink the coffee she gives me. I don’t seem to notice.

One thing I noticed is that everyone is somewhat secluded. There is no big open office space. And I see new faces all the time. At the same time I am wondering where some colleagues have their offices. Have they been moved to another floor? Some of them I haven’t seen for a month or two.

About a month ago the time has finally come. My boss gave me a black keycard and said she thought I have proved myself and that I was ready to join the more exclusive group within the company. The keycard was heavy and seemingly made of metal. It felt cold in my hand. My efforts of 1,5 years seemed to have paid off.

That Friday I wore my best suit to work and finished my tasks quickly. As everyone began to leave I waited until everyone was gone. I moved to the halls nervously as I didn’t know if I would fit in or who would be there. What was expected of me? I had reached the old part of the company headquarters and stood before the big elevator. I used my keycard and it finally opened. There was only one button inside. I pressed it and the elevator soon began to start his descent. The ride felt like ages.

I cannot remember what happened that day. How long have I been here? Have I ever left? All I know is something’s different. I can’t think properly. Am I scared? No, what for? Nothing happened right? Also I worked so hard for this. Why should this be a bad thing then? They told me they liked my loyalty and commitment to the company. They asked me if I was willing to sacrifice and serve the company. Of course I have said yes. I answered before the question was asked properly. Have I listened to what they said? What happened? I serve the company. I have for 1,5 years. Why should I stop now? They asked me what I would be willing to give up for the company. They seemed to like my answer. Did I make a mistake? Should I have come here? I can’t remember.
